Importing and registering your car to Germany

So you want to import your car to Germany. Oh dear, where do I start? This has been the longest, most exhausting, time consuming, and the only (so far) ridiculous bureaucracy-related operation we had to perform in Germany. Here I summarize the sequence of long operations that you need to perform. All of them require the previous one to be completed. Buy a green emission decal. Begin the German...

Banche e assicurazioni in Germania

Banks and insurances in Germany

Germany relies on banks much more than Italy. I strongly advise you to attempt to open a bank account (Girokonto) as soon as you find a flat, before relocating to Germany. Here I assume that you will look for a non online-only bank account. I wrote attempt to open an account because most of the banks expect you to have a German residence and address when you open a bank account. That said, most...

Letting Germany know you

The residency declaration Registering your new residency (Anmeldung) is quite straightforward. The name of the public office is not the same in every German city. For example, the Anmeldung for Stuttgart can be done in any Burgerbüro (no matter where you live in the city). Please note that you should perform the Anmeldung within two weeks from your relocation. The actual form is rather simple, as...

Affitto in Germania

The renting experience in Germany

Finding the flat Finding a flat in big cities is not always easy. In our case we had to start searching about 4 months before the relocation. The most common way to look for a flat is through websites. I was surprised at first, as in Italy it is still common to call real estate agencies and look for newspaper adverts. However, the majority of private individuals and most of the real estate...

Expat in Germany / Expat in Germania

I have recently relocated to Stuttgart, Germany with my wife. I will start working at the University of Stuttgart in May as a postdoc. Looking forward to the new life! Before relocating, I attempted to collect as much information as possible in order to face Germany’s infamous bureaucracy. Much useful information is present on the Web. However, I could not find all the fine details that...

There is never enough backup

I am a PhD student in computer science, and this is how much I am paranoid about losing my PhD dissertation.

To clarify on the implementation, I am using these instructions to synchronize between Overleaf and my computer, and between my computer and the two other Git servers. And, I am using duply on a Cron job to backup my private server’s git repository to..well, another server.

A new cycle has begun

I feel like I have just closed an important cycle of my life. Since the 1st of October, I am enrolled as a Ph.D. student in Computer Science at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. While my Ph.D. will only start from the 7th of January, I am already working in the S4FS research team. Many things are already coming out, that is why I have just opened the research category on this website...

What is next? (an update after Summer vacation)

I am slowly going back to real life. The last 7-8 months have been intense and challenging for me. On 23rd July I successfully graduated with a Master of Science degree in Computer Science (Software Engineering). The thesis comprised two intense empirical researches on the role of affective states for software developers. Thereafter, I spent a wonderful week in Majorca, to completely relax. I...

OpenPomo development has stopped

Time to admit it. I do not have the time to continue the development of OpenPomo. It has been funny to start the (probably) first non-trivial Pomodoro Android project ever. OpenPomo development started on October 2009 as a University project, under the name Pomodroid. I don’t even remember when it was first released to the public, as opensource software. My commitment to the project has...

Looking for the English version?

Do not RMA your Asus tablet in EU. A terrible experience.

Cerchi la versione in italiano? I love recent Asus Android tablets. Even if they are not the cheapest, they possess terrific hardware characteristics. I decided to work hard and spare 716,80€ for the Transformer Prime TF201 (32GB model) and the corresponding dock. I bought it online on 2012-03-20. Although the GPS and the WiFi connections are not the best, I was a lot satisfied with the product...

New theme for

You have noticed it, Task3 has now a new layout and new graphics. For the first time in my life, I decided to purchase a commercial theme for WordPress. The theme I was working on for Franz Magazine new website (it will be online today at about 18:00 GMT) is a commercial one made by WPZOOM guys. I have to admit it: they sometimes code horrors under the hood, but are very creative and brilliant...

Just created a Personal Landing Page

In the last two days I developed my personal landing page, hosted on . It is a nice looking, metallic minimalistic page, that currently contains: Some words about me My Curriculum in Italian and English My latest Tweets My latest blog posts Some contact information It has been developed using the ideas from a Lifehacker article, but I completely rewrote the design part using a JQuery accordion...
